Initial Situation

The Gesäuse National Park is one of Austria’s most valuable biodiversity hotspots – home to numerous endemic animal and plant species found nowhere else in the world.
Precisely because they are so specialized, these species are highly sensitive to threats such as climate change, habitat loss, and invasive species.

In 2017, the National Park launched a campaign to raise awareness among the public and visitors about these unique species.
The goal: convey knowledge, spark fascination, and foster willingness to protect – through high-quality, scientifically precise illustrations that highlight both beauty and ecological importance.

Objective of the Collaboration

Our task was to create visual material that:

  • Clearly shows the distinctive features of endemic species
  • Inspires both laypeople and experts to support the protection of these unique organisms
  • Combines scientific accuracy with aesthetic appeal
  • Works equally well for web, print media, and exhibitions

Implementation – Where Art Meets Science

In close collaboration with the park’s biologists, we created 6 detailed illustrations:

  • Drawn with pastel and colored pencils on A3 paper
  • Finest details emphasized to depict the species unmistakably
  • Balance of scientific precision and artistic expression to reach both hearts and minds

Integration into Public Outreach

The illustrations were used in multiple ways:

  • Exhibition in the visitor center and in temporary displays
  • Web presence of the National Park to enrich species profiles
  • Printed educational materials for schools, guided tours, and expert audiences
  • Social media campaigns on biodiversity in the Gesäuse

Impact & Results

  • Awareness strengthened: Visitors gained a deeper understanding of why these species are unique and worth protecting
  • Reach expanded: By using digital channels, the campaign also reached a younger, nature-interested audience
  • Long-term value: The illustrations remain a lasting resource, continuously contributing to conservation efforts

For projects in conservation & sustainability, we combine scientific expertise, visual design, and storytelling into one cohesive whole.
This makes complex topics tangible – transforming information into inspiration.
