GEO Day of Nature 2022 - Biosphere Reserve Nockberge
GEO Day of Nature
The GEO Day of Biodiversity is an annual event initiated by GEO magazine in 1999, which has since grown into the largest field research event in Central Europe. Its main goal is to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity and the need for its protection. Within 24 hours, scientists, naturalists, students, and interested laypeople conduct field research in selected areas to document biodiversity. Various species - from plants and insects to birds and mammals - are mapped in the field. The collected data contributes to understanding local biodiversity and can help identify changes in ecosystems over time.
Nockberge Biosphere Reserve
The Nockberge Biosphere Reserve, together with the adjacent Salzburg region in Lungau, is the largest biosphere reserve in Austria by area. It actively strives to preserve ecologically valuable habitats where humans live and work in harmony with nature, treating its flora and fauna with respect. Since 2016, the GEO Day of Nature has been held annually in the Nockberge Biosphere Reserve, enhancing awareness of its biodiversity and making a significant contribution to its research. The GEO Day was organized by the ÖKOTEAM Graz and E.C.O. Klagenfurt as part of the "Knowledge Transfer in the Nockberge Biosphere Reserve" project and on behalf of the "Development Nockberge Biosphere Reserve" association.
Our Contribution
During the GEO Day, participants collect not only valuable data but also photo and video material. In 2022, we edited a short video from this material to present the findings from the high moor around St. Lorenzen and to inspire nature enthusiasts to explore the nature in their own backyard.
First inatura Research Camp - Biosphere Reserve Großes Walsertal
Inatura - Experience Nature Exhibition Dornbirn
inatura Dornbirn is a center for nature exploration and scientific research. It supports independent research, contributing to environmental policy and conservation issues. Its goal is to turn natural history into an adventure and make research accessible to the public.
First inatura Research Camp
Research needs the next generation! Thus, in 2022, the first inatura Research Camp took place in the Großes Walsertal Biosphere Reserve. From September 1 to 4, university lecturers, scientific experts, and students gathered to explore the biodiversity of the Gadental. A special feature of this area is that it has been a natural forest reserve since the 1980s and has not been managed for decades. The researchers focused on beetles that feed on deadwood and those animal species living in the upper soil layers.
Our Contribution
The participants of the research camp collected both data and video material. From this, we edited a short video for public outreach.
